Kookaburra feeding

 

 

A young Kookaburra has appeared on my firewood cutting table. We have been hearing food calling and observing proceedings in a hollow high up on the main trunk of a nearby Angophera floribunda for some weeks now. We suspect a first flight from the nest:

 

The bird seems very young and it is a hot day. We are a little concerned for it's welfare, but succour is at hand:

 

 

One of the parents touches down with what looks like a white lipped snake in it's beak. The snake is still very much alive and has tied a knot in it's tail:

 

The heads go down and the meal is passed over:

 

A few seconds go by and the young bird has hooked down a live 150-200mm snake, tail knot and all:

 

A little post prandial contemplation - It's still a hot day and the bird is very young, but we are no longer in much  doubt that it will survive:
