A Landcare Discovery Journey for 16 to 23 year olds
This unique Australian journey using boats, bikes and boots is recognised at the Gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and is sponsored by The Crossing Land Education Trust with support from the NSW Environmental Trust, Far South Coast Landcare, Bournda Environmental Education Centre and Clean Energy for Eternity. As well as being a challenge, the journey is also about living more sustainably and contributing to the community.
Three day training camps
First training camp: the last week of January
Second training camp: third week in November
(Parents/Guardians are invited to an afternoon tea briefing at The Crossing from 2-3pm at the conclusion of each training camp)
Six and nine day journeys canoeing, cycling, bushwalking & landcare help
The middle day of each journey will be a remote base camp Landcare Project. This ensures that each journey section is broken into two parts with packs containing no more than 4 days food at a time.
Sea to Escarpment Journey: second week in April
Escarpment to Snow Journey: last week in November
Applicants will be shortlisted
Applications by young people in SE NSW are invited until the end of the second week in December each year - 12 places available.
Applicants must be 16+yrs (to 23 yrs) by training commencement in the last week of January with a strong level of fitness. They must be responsible and highly organised with initiative, energy and enthusiasm. They must complete two training camps of three days each (total cost of $400 for all training includes Duke of Edinburgh Award book, insurance, staff instruction, vehicle support, accommodation and food).
Successful applicants receive full journey scholarships
Young people selected receive expert training, support and a full Sea to Snow journey scholarship for the two parts of the Sea to Snow Journey from Sea to Escarpment (6 days) and Escarpment to Snow (9 days).
In return applicants must commit to give talks to service organisations and fundraise, like a walkathon, to 'pay the journey forward' to ensure that at least one other young person has the same chance as themselves to take part in the journey the following year. These talks and landcare participation during the journey also help build confidence and skills and these community contributions are also recognised under the community service section of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Gifts over $2 are tax deductible to donors
Funds raised by young people will be paid into The Crossing Land Education Trust Fund to be held in Trust for the next journey.
Crossing fundraising supports the Sea to Snow Journey with assistance from Far South Coast Landcare, Bournda EEC, Clean Energy for Eternity and the NSW Environmental Trust.
