Editors, a four-piece from Birmingham UK, released their debut album The Back Room in 2005. The Back Room was a fine first album and reviews were generally positive, but some criticised the transparency of their post-punk influences. Nonetheless, the release opened an interesting trans-Atlantic rivalry between Editors and New York's Interpol, as the two chief exponents of the Joy Division gloom rock heritage. Both Editors and Interpol have recently released new singles and both are soon to release new albums. The excellent new single, Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors shows that Editors have moved beyond the Joy Division via Interpol template. The song is more expansive melodic powerpop, light and dark with early U2 style needle-sharp lead guitar over brooding bass lines. There is even an unexpected singalong choral toward the end; here Editors are messing with the formula.
