How to undertake a General Boat Licence Test.
Firstly you need to have studied the NSW Maritime Handbook prior to attending a Boating Safety Course. These books are available free of charge from the Marine Rescue or NSW Maritime. Telephone [6495 3331] or email us for a copy.
1. Attend a Boating Safety Course [BSC] at the Marine Rescue Merimbula office on the first Wednesday of every month, commencing at 1400hrs [2pm]. The BSC and the test will take about 3 hours.
2. Successfully complete the Boat Licence Test immediately following the BSC or within 12 months of attending the BSC.
From the 1st June 2009, it will also be compulsory to provide evidence of practical boating experience before the licence test can be attempted.
To gain the required practical boating experience the following options are available:
• Undertake a practical boating course with a Recognised Training Provider or by
• Completing a Competency Log
If the practical boating course is undertaken, the applicant will be issued a Certificate of Completion by the RTP (Recognised Training Provider) which must be presented to NSW Maritime before a boat licence will be issued.
If the competency log option is selected, the applicant must complete a minimum of three trips in a powered vessel under power. Trip details must be recorded in the competency log and be verified by an experienced skipper (a person who has held a boat licence for a minimum of 3 years).
The completed logbook must be presented by the applicant before the licence test can be attempted.
The Boating Licence Practical Logbook can be obtained free of charge from any NSW Maritime office or downloaded from Maritime website (www.maritime.nsw.gov.au)
The General Licence test consists of 40 multiple choice questions comprising:-
Section A: 15 questions of which all must be answered correctly
Section B: 25 questions of which a minimum 20 must be answered correctly.
3. After attending the BSC and within 12 months of successfully completing the test, apply to NSW Maritime for a Boat Licence.
4. Pay the appropriate fees [subject to change]

One year concession $20.50 } NSW Maritime fee
Three year concession $49 }
Aplicants who fail the test or who do not do the test after attending the BSC, will be issued with a General Licence BSC Certificate of Completion which is valid for 12 months. During this period the applicant, on presentation of the Certificate, can undertake the licence test an unlimited number of times.
