Named after a Saul Bellow novel, Augie March are a literate indie pop band based in Melbourne. Singer/songwriter Glenn Richards’ style is poetic and strong on melody. Songs are often gentle and understated, founded on piano lines or acoustic guitar riffs, with texturing provided by strings, keyboard and backing harmonies. Musical reference points are diverse, ranging from 60s Beatles pop, through Bob Dylan, acoustic folk, piano-bar jazz and rock. Augie March’s third album Moo You Bloody Choir debuted last year at number 10 on the ARIA charts. The first single from the album One Crowded Hour made it to number one in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2006, and won the APRA Song of the Year. Earlier this year, the band won the 2006 Australian Music Prize. Two earlier albums Sunset Studies (2000) and Strange Bird (2002) were critical successes and consolidated the growing fan base. With Moo You Bloody Choir, Augie March seem set to receive the national and international recognition they deserve. Augie March may well be the most interesting and important band in Australia in this opening decade of the new century. Have a listen to Addle Brains off Strange Bird (2002), and the whimsical Thin Captain Crackers from Moo You Bloody Choir (2006) - right-click, 'save as'.
