The National formed in New York in 1999. Matt Berninger's slow baritone and gritty lyrics offer a fresh take on territory covered by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Lou Reed and Nick Cave. A 21st century rhythm section provides atmosphere and texture, and the kickarse drumming from Bryan Devendorf puts some backbone into the songs. After signing with the Beggars Banquet label in 2005, the band members quit their web design day jobs to concentrate on their music. ‘Alligator' was released later that year, drawing both critical and commercial success. The National released ‘Boxer' in May this year, and this has also been extremely well received by the market and the press. This set is tighter and more focused than the sometimes schizophrenic ‘Alligator', and production is better. ‘Boxer' rises in stature with each listen; it's one of the year's best. Sample All the Wine from ‘Alligator' (2005) and Apartment Story from ‘Boxer' (2007). The National - All the Wine The National - Apartment Story
