For investors wishing to source information, research or opinion, the following provides a list of referral sources for new and existing investors.

1. Responsible Investment Association of Australia (RIAA) www.responsibleinvestment.org. This site is quite comprehensive, with links to fund managers and advisors who operate in this area.
2. Specialist financial advisers.
3. Australian Stock Exchange. A good source of listed company’s announcements and contact details, and information on new listings www.asx.com.au
4. Broker reports. A number of bodies provide reports and regular updates on ethical funds. These are available from both mainstream and specialist ethical research houses.
5. Media. Internet, books, newspapers and magazines, radio and tv.
6. Specialist (Australian) subscriber website and subscriber magazine available ‘Ethical Investor’. Go to www.ethicalinvestor.com.au
7. Prospectuses or Product Disclosure Statements (PDS). These are offer documents and outline how your money is invested and what costs apply.
8. ASIC publishes information on Socially Responsible Investments (search on SIA) on its consumer products website www.fido.gov.au

By law each financial product for which a PDS is issued is required to state the extent to which the product issuer does, or does not, take into account labour standards and environmental, social or ethical considerations for the purpose of selecting, retaining or realising the investment.

Likewise company annual reports are required to comment whether they do or they don’t take these considerations into account when conducting their business. Some companies proudly highlight their achievements in this regard, not only on their reports but also on their website or other promotional material.
