Anglers fishing for flathead had a good week with flathead back on the bite on the grounds north and south of Merimbula. Reef fishing still isn't brilliant but there is a few snapper morwong and leatherjackets for those that persist. Gamefishing is good with plenty of small yellowfin and striped tuna about and unfortunately one boat had the misfortune of missing out after 3 marlin strikes last Saturday.

Salmon have been a bit scarce on the beaches but some good tailor have been taken by anglers. Local estuaries are firing with all species on the chew and good news is the prawns will be running over next week.  Don't forget our huge seafood raffle at The Chook and the Ox tavern 5.30pm Thursday nights and 6.30 Friday night Dave Stewart and Rob Wood will open the Spencer Park clubhouse for members and the general public. Fishing report will be after the beer and seafood raffle so come on down for a fun night.

May your reel scream, Mex.

Fishing proved to be a bit tougher over the last week as there were some crappy days at sea with uncomfortable seas experienced by crews. Those that fished wide had trouble finding any marlin but the boats fishing the bottom had success catching harpooka and big eye.

Close to shore was okay with crews reporting flathead in numbers but again the dreaded chinaman leatherjacket were about in huge numbers. Reef fishing was a bit quiet but its promising to hear reports of kingfish sighted on nearly all of our inshore reefs and headlands. Beach fishing is great with plenty of gutters and on a high tide salmon and tailor can be found. The local estuaries are firing with dusky flathead, trevaly and bream all on the chew and everyone is counting down the nights waiting for the next prawn run in two weeks time.

Our seafood raffle is on at The ChookandThe Ox Thursday 5.30-7pm and Glen Pattie and Darragh Reynolds will open the Spencer Park clubrooms 6.30pm Friday night. A selection of drinks and nibbles are on offer and everyone is welcome. A fishing report will be held prior to the raffle so bring the family or  grab a friend  and come on down.

May your reel scream, Mex.

Merimbula Fishing Club

Gamefishing was great with Marlin on the chew over the weekend. Boats that fished on the Saturday all had action and either caught or lost striped and blue marlin. Unfortunately Sunday wasn't a good day due to big seas with plenty of wind and most crews stayed at home.

Fishing for flathead is  a great option with plenty of sandys north of Merimbula. Plenty of gear pinching chinaman leatherjackets with them and a few gummy sharks which are always a bonus. Out wide the harpooka have been on the bite and the inshore reefs are fishing okay with snapper and morwong caught. Headlands and beaches are fun with plenty of salmon and tailor up to 2 kilo being caught in big numbers.

Local wharfs are producing squid and blackfish and lake fishing is also a good option with all species on the bite. Don't forget our huge 6 tray seafood raffle 5.30Thursday night at The Chook and The Ox and then Friday night we will be having a special fish BBQ at our Spencer Park clubhouse. All members and guests are invited to this family night and as usual a fun night will be had including fishing reports and running of the beer and seafood raffle. Greg Liddell and Johno McKay will be on duty opening the doors open at 6.30.

Fishing was on the improve with anglers having a ball on the high seas. Flathead fishermen bagged out in a couple of hours with the majority of fish being over 40 cm and not many undersized fish at all. Only bad thing was the unwanted presence of chinaman leatherjackets turning up late in the week.

Reef fishing also picked up with some nice snapper, morwong and leatherjackets on the chew. Fish of the week would have to be a six kilo snapper caught by Jason Savage.  Salmon are great fun to catch on light gear and anyone trawling our headlands found them in big schools and keen to take a lure. Out wide gamefishing was also great with marlin caught around bait schools from 50 fathoms to the shelf.

Last Sunday 16 teams contested the second Dusky Dash For Cash in the Merimbula Lake in near perfect conditions. Snapper, trevally, bream, flounder, tailor and dusky flathead were all caught but in general the fishing proved to be a little slow over the day. Rob Wood was the winner of $500 cash with a fish measuring 78 cm. Gerald Smith was runner up with a fish of 64 cm and Mex Williams came third with a 57.5 cm fish. All fish in the tournament were caught and photographed then returned to the water to fight another day.

Our seafood night will be on the Saturday March 29 and only a few seats are vacant. Ring Rob Wood 0413333598 if you intend on going but be quick as its first in on limited seating for arguably the best value seafood dinner about. Please support our 6 tray seafood raffle at the Chook and The Ox Thursday nights at 5.30- 7.pm and on Friday night Darragh Reynolds and Barrie Francis will be on duty at the Spencer Park clubrooms. Everyone welcome so grab a friend and come on down for a couple of drinks.

Raffles and fishing reports around 7.30.   Mex

Fishing has been  tough over the past week with many anglers coming home with very few fish when out on the ocean. The ever reliable flathead are there to be caught but only the experienced crews with local knowledge and honed skills were able to catch a feed. Inshore reef fishing was near non-existent and the only place to catch a kingfish was on Mowarry Point and they also were on and off the chew.

Our lake and beaches were the best of all with anglers catching salmon and tailor in big numbers when tossing small metal lures on the high tide. Reports of 50 salmon caught and released were common and some of these fish were up to 3 kilo. Lake fishing is still firing with dusky flathead being the main target as anglers were honing there skills for this Sundays Dusky Dash For Cash. Fishing time is from am till 3.30pm and will be in the Merimbula Lake. Cash and Prizes are on offer  and the tournament is open to everyone.

Ring Dave Stewart 0403198997 for more information or attend the  briefing at our Spencer Park clubrooms this Friday 7.30 pm. Don't forget our huge seafood raffles Thursday 5.30pm at the Chook and The Ox and the Spencer Park clubrooms will be open 6.30 pm Friday by bar staff Tom Scott and Bill Pryor.   May your reel scream, Mex.
