My text reference - "Backyard Insects" by Paul Horne and Denis Crawford

Dragonflies - Odonata Anisoptera, are thought to be living representatives of the first flying insects, in that their wings cannot be folded back over the abdomen when at rest. Most hold their wings out horizontally as if in flight.
Damselflies - Odonata Zygoptera: Most hold their wings vertically above their bodies.
This leg arrangement is handy for seizing prey such as smaller insects in flight.
Brightly coloured and fast flying, Dragonflies and Damselflies are often found near streams lakes or dams.
