Gamefishing was still great last week with plenty of tuna found from 30 fathoms on. In close to shore anglers that fished the reef system had a ball catching snapper, morwong, leatherjackets and nannygai. The sand flats proved to be fatal for most as the dreaded chinaman leatherjackets were rampart and were found from the beaches to the shelf.
One angler told me that even the Merimbula Lake was full of these pests as he had set some crab pots over night and the following morning his traps were full of chinaman leatherjackets. That's scary to hear and we hope that this doesn't become a normal occurrence. The estuaries are fishing great with plenty of bream, tailor and trevaly on the chew and the local wharfs are a good option with squid on the prowl.
Next Sunday June 1st will be the 2nd Snapper Classic starting 6.30 am and finishing 3.30 pm. $50 per team consisting of 2 anglers per boat and additional anglers are $25 per person. Great prizes will be awarded to the three heaviest snapper. They are $500 cash for the heaviest snapper, 2nd heaviest a Penn Slammer Bait Runner and Penn Power Stick and 3rd heaviest a Snapper Tackle Pack. A briefing will be held at the Spencer Park Clubrooms Friday 30th May at 7.30 pm. This competion is open to all anglers holding a current NSW fishing licence, or are exempt from holding a licence.
5.30pm Thursday nights at the Chook and The Ox tavern is the place to be to have a chance in winning in our seafood raffle and everyone is invited to our Spencer Park clubhouse 6.30pm Friday night. Glen Pattie and Darragh Reynolds will be on bar duty and I'm sure it will be a very busy night as registration and briefing will be part of the night as well as our beer and seafood raffles and local fishing report. Again everyone is welcome to our club facilities which includes a very well stocked fridge with a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. May your reel scream, Mex
Fishing is fantastic at the moment providing you can find a day on the water when the cold wind isn't blowing. Out wide plenty of yellowfin and stripy tuna are keen to take a bait or lure and the odd marlin is still on the prowl. Harpooka and blueye are in abundance and I'm sure plenty will be caught whilst waiting for dark to fall when we hold our 16th Merimbula Broadbill Tournament 20th-22nd June.
Fishing the sand flats north and south has been worthwhile with sand and tiger flathead in abundance. Some big flying gurnard up to a kilo have also been about but unfortunately gummy sharks have been scarce. Inshore reefs are brilliant with plenty of pan size snapper along with morwong, leatherjacket, nannygai and sweep.
We are holding our 2nd Snapper Classic on Sunday June 1st and this competion is open to all anglers for a chance to win $500 cash. Cost is $50 per team consisting 2 anglers and any additional anglers are $25 each. Fishing can be done anywhere between Goalen Head and the Southern most point of Disaster Bay. Fishing starts at 6.30 am and finishes at 3.30 pm. All teams must leave and return to Merimbula.
Estuary fishing is also great with dusky flathead, bream, trevaly, whiting and tailor all being caught. Beach fishing hasn't been as good as it could but this may be due to the fact that we haven't had many days with the surf pounding. Don't forget our huge seafood raffle at the Chook and The Ox on Thursday nights 5.30 pm start and this Friday 6.30 Greg Liddell and John McKay will be on bar duty at our Spencer Park clubhouse. Local fishing report will be before the beer and seafood raffle so grab a mate or bring the family down.
May your reel scream, Mex.

This time of year is the best time to go fishing as we have great weather providing we have an absence of a south westerly as they can make it cold and dangerous for boats to return home if well out to sea.
Gamefishing is at its best with tuna on the boil plus a few marlin and sharks on the chew. Bottom fishing out wide is also a must with plenty of harpooka and blue eye on the go with crews bagging out most days with quality fish averaging 8 kilo and better.Thankfully the inshore reefs have also started to fire and anglers are having a ball catching morwong, snapper and leatherjackets in good numbers.
Kingfish have also been great around headlands and reefs along with squid from the local wharfs.Gummy sharks have also been found on the reef edges and will hopefully improve as the moon rises. Fishing the sand flats is also a good prospect with both sand and tiger flathead being caught north and south of Merimbula and best news is the gear pinching chinamen leatherjackets have backed off some days.
Salmon and tailor are also on the books with beaches down south being the best and as usual the local esturarys are all firing. All is looking good for this weekends grudge match between Eden, Pambula and Merimbula fishing clubs starting this Friday 4 pm and finishing 12 noon Sunday.
We definitely need all our bottom bouncing crews to put there hand up as we have a lot of our crews flying our flag in the Canberra Yellowfin Tournament in Bermagui this weekend. Eden fishing club is the host club this year and will provide a BBQ and presentation at there clubhouse at Quarantine Bay Sunday afternoon. Further information can be obtained from Tom Scott 64950530 or Shannon Stokes 0427505834 or come down to the Spencer Park clubhouse this Friday night 6.30 pm for a report on how to beat our southern neighbours in the art of angling plus a chance to have a win in the beer and seafood raffle.
Everyone welcome and we can promise a great time if your keen to have a crack in angling or would like to be part of a very social and family orientated club. Don't forget our huge seafood raffle will be at the Chook & The Ox this Thursday 5.30 and the Snapper Classic will held on June 1st out of Merimbula. May your reel scream, Mex.
Local Merimbula fisherman Bill Gilligan was relieved to have finally hooked his first Yellow Fin tuna, when out of the deep blue sea surfaced a this Killer Whale. Yes this amazing creature from the deep thought a feed of Yellow Fin Tuna would make a nice lunch and Bill's first tuna would be that lunch. The pictures here tell the story!! Well Bill, maybe next time.....
