- you can use up to 120 litres each time you use the washing machine
- when buying a new washing machine look for one that is water and energy efficient
- front loading washing machines use 40% less water than top loading washing machines
- Make sure the washing machine is fully loaded and adjust the water level to match the load.
- If your machine has a suds-saver option, use it when washing more than one load.
in the Bathroom & Toilet...
- A leaking toilet cistern can be extremely wasteful - up to 16,000 litres of water in a year. And you might not even be aware of it ! To check your cistern, place a few drops of food colouring in the tank. Without flushing it, look for colouring in the toilet bowl. If it's getting through, you've got a leak, and it's time to call a plumber.
- Recycle a plastic water bottle by filling it with water and putting it in your toilet cistern.
- replacing a single flush toilet with a 6/3 dual flush can save up to 8 litres per flush (or for the average family 36,180 litres per year)
- leaking toilets can waste up to 16,000 litres per year
- don't leave the tap running while you brush your teeth
- older style shower heads can use up to 24 litres per minute. Install a AAA rated shower head (9 litres per minute), depending on water pressure, location and quality of pipework.
- Take shorter showers.
- Fit a clock or timer in the bathroom.
- Don't leave the water running when brushing your teeth or shaving.
- Use recycled bath, shower and laundry wastewater in the garden, but not on edible plants or vegetables.
in the Kitchen...
- a running tap can use up to 15-20 litres/minute
- wash fruit and vegies in a sink half full (approx. 12 lt)
- don't rinse dishes before loading into dishwasher
- an average dishwasher uses 35 litres per wash so follow the manufacturers instructions and maximize its use
- Do not rinse dishes under a running tap. Instead, partially fill a sink or bowl with rinsing water.
- Keeping a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator stops the need to run the cold tap until the water is cool enough.
in the Garden...
- install a rainwater tank
- don't cut lawn shorter than 2cm
- mulching your garden can save up to 73% of water lost through evaporation
- a forgotten sprinker can waste 1000 litres of water per hour
- garden irrigation systems & watering timbers
- moisture sensors are useful for detecting when your garden's had enough water
- water during the cooler periods of the day, early morning or late evening
- To help water seep down to tree roots plant 10 to 15cm lengths of perforated agricultural pipe around the root zone and spaced about one metre apart with the lip slightly above ground level. Fill the pipes with water once a week in hot weather.
- In summer, water your garden less often but more deeply. A good soak once a week is more useful than a surface sprinkling once a day.
- Cyclic watering helps reduce runoff. So for more efficient watering, cycle between 15 minutes of watering and a two-hour break, in the morning and evening. Keep an eye on how much water you're using, runoff and the wetness of the soil. Using a tap timer can help.
- Install a good drip-irrigation system under a thick layer of mulch (at least 75mm) so water doesn't evaporate as it tries to penetrate the mulch.
- Turn off your irrigation system during or after rain.
- Water garden beds separately - they don't need as much water as lawns.
- Water the base of plants and shrubs, not the leaves.
- Use a sprinkler system with micro sprays for vegetables, shrubs and annuals.
- Do not use the hose to wash down paths and driveways - sweep them instead. A hose can use 1,000 litres of water an hour. Remember to turn the tap off when you have finished.
- Save water when washing your car. Do it less frequently, limit the use of your hose by using a bucket of soapy water instead and wash your car on the lawn.
- When using a sprinkler try not to water paved areas.
