AIM To provide children with safe, supervised interactions with animals. RATIONALE Children will learn to care for and interact with animals. They will learn to respect and handle them in an appropriate manner, and to enjoy playing with them in a manner that is safe for both. STRATEGIES Any contact between Daycare children and domestic or farm animals at the Carers home must be directly supervised by the Carer at all times. If the Carer ‘s pet bites, scratches or growls at Daycare children that pet must, from then onwards, be kept separate from Daycare children at all times. All pets which have contact with the children must be kept in good health, de-wormed, vaccinated and clean. Outdoor areas used by pets must be cleaned of excreta before any children are allowed on them. Spots where excreta was picked up need to be hosed down before children are allowed to play on that area. Pet’s water bowls and food plates/bowls must be out of the reach of the children. The Carers must ensure that children always wash their hands after playing with pets Carers will encourage children to be kind and considerate towards the animals and not abuse them in any way. .
