Carer’s Priorities during Emergencies

AIM
To achieve maximum safety and prompt treatment of all Family Daycare children and/or Carers during emergencies.

RATIONALE
Emergencies that are attended to in an organized and efficient manner produce the best results for all concerned. In attempting to delineate a protocol for such emergencies we have standardized procedures.

STRATEGIES
Emergencies will be handled as follows :

EMERGENCIES INVOLVING A CHILD IN CARE

Carers and Staff are to note that during an emergency priority is always given to the child. Please follow the procedure below:

1) Attend immediately to the child, and using your First Aid knowledge make the child     as safe and comfortable as possible;

2) If required Dial 000 for Ambulance Emergency Service and give all necessary
information;

3) While waiting for the ambulance to arrive ensure that all other children are as safe and calm as possible

4) When the Ambulance Officers arrive follow their instructions;

5) After the emergency is dealt with phone the child's Families and inform them of
what has occurred, then phone the Co-ordination Unit's Office and inform them as well;

6) Make sure that all other children are all right.

7) Be aware of your own stress.

EMERGENCIES INVOLVING A CARER

All Care Givers please note that you should establish a back-up person.
Ideally this person should be a Carer, living nearby.

In reality this may not always be possible, so your back up person should be mature, trustworthy, and of good character.

When the emergency occurs phone your back-up person to come and take care of the children while you deal with it. Depending on the type of emergency, you or the back up person must immediately contact the Co-ordination Unit and advise them of the emergency.

It is important to note that if, due to the nature of the emergency, you have to leave
your home, your back up person should only be in charge of the children for the short while it will take for a member of the Co-ordination Unit to get to the Carer’s home.  The Co-ordination Unit Staff member will phone the Families of all the children in your care and advise them.

ANY OTHER EMERGENCIES

All other emergencies must be dealt with by your back up person(s).
If the emergency does not involve a child placed in care, or the Carer personally, it is expected that your back-up person will deal with these in your place.

If you must deal with any other emergency personally, the children in your care can only be left with another Carer or a member of the Co-ordination Unit Staff.
Contact the Co-ordination Unit immediately and make appropriate arrangements.
