AIM To promote the children’s natural abilities as well as help prepare them for further learning. To offer a home environment that is stimulating to personal growth and activities that support learning in all its facets. RATIONALE It is beneficial to all children in care to have a program of daily organized activities that are in accordance with their age and development. These activities may include outings and excursions. STRATEGIES Carers are expected to create a program of daily activities. To aid them in doing so Child Development Officers will provide ideas, information and back-up, not only during their visits but at any time, on request from the Carers. A bi- monthly information letter will be mailed to all Carers, to aid with ideas for craft and any other activities. Carers are expected to display their program or to inform the Families of the content of their program on request. Outings are part of daily home life. If Carers wish to take children on outings they must remember the following - 1) Outings within the Carer’s own area (the town or village you live in) are considered part of his/her daily routine and do not require any special permission from the Family, who signed an agreement to this effect when they registered with the Scheme. However, outings away from the Carer’s own area require written permission from the Family. All Carers have a form to this effect, which they must ask the Family to sign before they can take Daycare children on these outings. It is the Family’s privilege to refuse to allow their children on any such outings. 2) Excursions to the beach, public swimming pools, private pools, and rivers (or any large bodies of water) are not allowed by this Scheme, because it is felt that a Carer with 4 children under school age may not be able to keep them safe at all times, even if the children are wearing back and arm safety floats. Sprinklers and wading pools may be used for water play. In the case of wading pools low levels of water are to be used and they are to be emptied as soon as the play is finished. Children are NOT to access any wading pool that still contains water unsupervised, at any time. OTHER ACTIVITIES The use of television during the hours the children are in care should be restricted to such programs and/or videos appropriate for the children's ages. THE TELEVISION SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ON ALL THE TIME. Videos should be used sparingly and only when weather or special conditions make them an appropriate option. Children should not be allowed to ride bikes unsupervised on public paths, and they should not, at any time, ride bikes on the road. Safety helmets should be used at all times when children are riding their bikes. REQUIREMENTS OF REGULATIONS AND OTHER STANDARDS NSW Children’s Services Regulation 2004, Clause 64, 65 and Clause 77,78
