Visits to Carers

AIM
To outline the responsibilities and rights of both Co-ordination Unit Staff and Carers in regard to visits to Carers premises.

RATIONALE
To clarify the procedure for conducting visits to Carer’s premises which takes into account the purpose and outcomes of visits and to ensure that a systematic process is in place for monitoring the schemes practices.

STRATEGIES
The Co-ordination Unit Staff:

•    Conduct visits to Carers premises in a professional and respectful way.
•    Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements by Carers.
•    Provide Carers with information and training in the regulatory requirements.
•    Monitor observance of Scheme practices and policies.
•    Conduct visits to Carers regularly and in a timely manner.
•    Have a balance of announced and un-announced visits to Carers.
•     Ensure records are kept about visits and the records be made available to Carers.
•    Ensure children in care are observed regularly.
•    Where time and distance precludes visits to every child, observations made by the Carer are discussed and recorded.

The Carers –
•    Receive visitors from the Co-ordination Unit in a professional and respectful way.
•    May not hinder any authorised person by or under the Children’s and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 to enter the premises where the children’s service is provided.
•    Provide information and observations of children in care to Co-ordination Unit Staff if requested.
•    Read and sign the record of visit made by the Staff member.
•    Rectify within an agreed time frame areas which do not meet regulatory requirements.
•    Agree to recommendations of improvements to care provided which does not meet Scheme policies and procedures.
•    Actively participate in Family Day Care Quality Assurance and work with Co-ordination Staff to improve quality of care on an ongoing basis as identified on visits.
