WHY DO WE NEED REGULAR SERVICING FOR OUR VEHICLES
Maintenance refers to work performed to retain the various parts of the vehicle in a normal operating condition. Scheduled maintenance may prevent breakdowns, and also extends the service life of the vehicle components.
Maintenance schudules vary for different vehicles; a general example for passenger cars and light commercial vehilces is 10 000kms or six months, which ever comes first.
From the time that fresh oil is put into the engine crankcase, it gradually loses its effectiveness as a lubricant. Contaminants such as gums and lacquer like substances left by the combustion of fuel, dust and metal particles released as the engine wears, accumulate in the oil.
After many kilometers of operation the oil will have deteriorated to the extent that it is no longer suitable for continued use. Unless it is drained and replaced, engine wear will increase. Engine oil and oil filters should be replaced every six months or 10 000kms.
