I was watching the ABC's Q and A program which was primarily on climate issues when I saw a video question submitted by a member of the public on the issue of gay marriage. The question was particularly hard hitting due to the statement "Penny Wong YOU ARE GAY".., it begun, it then proceeded to ask her what her position was on the current policy of the government of not recognising gay marriages.
Penny looked decidedly uncomfortable answering the question as she towed the party line of maintaining the status quo.
I found myself thinking if I was her how would I deal that question ?
This is my attempt ...
I have nothing but respect for the many christian sects and other major religious institutions for having discriminatory policies on the issue of marriage. They have every right to discriminate on that issue. After all they believe they have it on the highest authority that marriage is an institution between a man and a woman for the utlimate purpose of procreation.
However the Australian Government claims to be a democracy, to uphold the separation of Church and State, to honor its own policies of anti-discrimination. To then discriminate on the recognition of marriage between consenting adults is clearly hypocritical, clearly unjust and just plain wrong.
To direct a question at Australian religious leaders, Do you really trust the Australian Government to represent the word of GOD ?
Surely it is the role of religious leaders to educate the Australian public on the morality of this issue. Surely government is not capable of dealing with the morality involved with this issue.
So basically the Australian Government should stop finding reasons to descriminate and leave that to the public.
