Making Mokume

Mokume is being made here by interleaving thin layers of copper and iron. Placing them in a press and heating them in a gas forge. The hot metal is then placed on an anvil and struck with a hammer to weld the leaves

Heating and striking may occur many times. The temperature reached  and striking technique is critical for a solid weld.

The ornate end result is achieved by engraving down through several layers during the beating out process.

These photos were taken at Mike Petersen's forge in the Tantawangalo. Check out Mike's web site at www.mikepetersen.com
