The Boer War Memorial c.1880-1890.

The Boer War Memorial, Bega Park.

This Memorial to the soldiers of the Light Horse who went over to the Boer War is the only Memorial of it's kind south of Wollongong.

It can be found in the Bega Park - Upper St - and is adjacent to the Swimming Pool and Show grounds to the East of town.

PEITION FOR A MUNICIPALITY - BEGA

HiS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive council, directs the publication, in accordance with the municipalities Act of 1867, of the substance and prayer of a petition addressed to His Excellency, and signed by 225 persons, praying that their locality therein defined may be erected into a municipality, under the name of the

"Municipal District of Bega."

A Brief Early History of Bega Valley

In 1829 some Braidwood squatters came down Eurambene Mt into Wandella near Cobargo to explore the kangaroo grasslands and open forests.  They returned with cattle in 1832 and William Duggan Tarlinton chose Cobargo for his run. Other squatters included John Campbell, Henry Badgery, Captain Raine, Thomas Cowper, Curlewis, Major Elrington, Pollack brothers, Alsops and Dr Braidwood, who did not settle in the Valley.
