The Benefits and Uses of Mangroves
Mangroves are an important part of the marine eco-system . They provide fish habitats and nurseries for many species of marine life. About 75% of fish caught commercially are dependant on foodchains that can be traced back to these coastal forests. Mangroves have long functioned as a storehouse of materials providing food , medicines , shelter , and tools.
Numerous medicines are derived from mangroves. Ashes or bark infusions of certain species can be applied to skin disorders and sores including leprosy . Headaches , rheumatism , snake bites , boils , ulcers, diarrhea , hemorrhages , and many more conditions are traditionally treated with mangrove plants. Certain trees are prized for their hardwood and used for boat building and furniture timber as well as tools for digging , spears , and boomerangs.
Mangroves provide protection and habitat for many bird species and also for mammals such as crocodiles. Crustaceans and shellfish are also dependant on the mangroves . The mangroves grow on the intertidal areas between the land and the sea and provide protection to coastal land from ocean winds and salt effects. They in turn protect the ocean and reefs against the nitrogen rich runoff from the land by filtering
