Naturopathy or Naturopathic Medicine is a holistic philosophy to healthcare, involving the practice of preventing, assessing and treating conditions of the human body and mind. The emphasis is on viewing and treating the individual as a whole, comprised of a complex interaction of physical, mental, emotional, social and other factors.
The fundamental Principles, on which Naturopathic Philosophy is based, are:
*First do no harm (Primum No Nocere)
*The healing power of nature (Vis Mediatrix Naturae)
*Identify and treat the cause (Tolle Causam)
*Heal the whole person (Tolle Totum)
*Physician as teacher (Docere)
*Prevention (Prevention is better than cure)
Naturopathy considers symptoms expressed, by a person in a state of ill health, to be an indication of a deeper disease process. It is believed that the body has generated the symptoms in an attempt to heal itself. It is for this reason that Naturopathic Medicine endeavours to address the underlying cause as well as the presenting symptoms. When only the symptoms of a disease process are treated, the underlying cause is never addressed. This usually diminishes the body’s ability to heal itself and leads to a progressive worsening of health issues. By educating clients and implementing methods that support the body, it is possible to treat the underlying causes, presenting symptoms and improve overall health and vitality.
Naturopathic Medicine is suitable for everyone and can be used alongside conventional medicine. It is however, very important that the client’s Doctors details and a list of any medications they may be taking is provided, so that these can be taken into consideration by the Naturopath when devising treatment strategies and the client’s Doctor can be contacted if necessary.
