Windy conditions have been playing a bit part in keeping fishing trips down to a minimum which is a shame as anglers that do make it to sea are finding tiger flathead and gummy sharks on the grounds north and south of Merimbula.

Morwong, leatherjacket and  snapper averaging 35 cm from the inshore reefs when fishing dusk or dawn are normally encounted but the bite seems to only last for an hour or so. Reports of kingfish up to 10 kilo are common south of Eden but they are still proving elusive to hook and hopefully they will come on in the near future. Schools of mackerel are starting to show up off the headlands and this should also help to bring the fish on.

Estuary fishing is also good with all species on the chew. Anglers using berly and baits have been doing very well whilst the plastic brigade have also had moderate success.  The only downside has been the lack of prawns over this dark phase of the moon. Hopefully the next dark will bring on a good run.

Last Sunday we had a ball at Mandeni with over 40 members playing golf, bocce and enjoying a BBQ lunch. It was good to see members from the Eden Amature Fishing Club join us and were all looking forward to next years Mandeni Golf Challenge. 15th and 16th November is the date for the Merimbula Tackleworld Tri-Estuary Challenge so don't miss out on a chance to win cash or prizes on offer.

This tournament is open to all anglers and rules and entry forms can be obtained at the fishing club Friday nights or from Merimbula Tackleworld next to the traffic lights. For more information ring Rob Wood 64959854. Peter Fairbairn and Darragh Reynolds will be on bar duty this Friday night and as always a beer and seafood raffle will be held  after the local fishing report around 7.45 pm.

Enjoy the view and a couple of coldies with a few fishing story's thrown in at the Spencer Park clubhouse with both members and visitors to the area all welcome. Our huge 15 tray seafood raffle held Sunday afternoons at the Merimbula Bowling club is also a must as we have a 15 tray seafood raffle plus the chance of taking out a cash prize at the end. Its drawn 5.45pm so be early and don't miss out.

Fishing has picked up with flathead caught up and down the coast as long as you can stand losing gear to chinaman leatherjackets. Reef fishing is also starting to fire with morwong and jackets most days and snapper on some occasions.

Gummy sharks were about the week before but have started to slow down a bit. Beach fishing has also slowed but the good news is bream, trevally, whiting, tailor, salmon, flounder and dusky flathead have been on the chew in all the local estuaries. The next dark will be greeted with enthusiasm by prawners as we are now at the start of the season proper.

Rock fishing is also worth a shot with a few drummer and leatherjackets on the prowl but at times  they to can be disappointing. As always fish with a mate and have one eye on the swell at all times. Fishing wide is also a great option with harpooka caught and there's always the added bonus of tolling up bluefin, yellowfin, albacore or striped tuna.

A general working bee will be held at the clubhouse this Saturday morning starting 8 am. Many hands make light work so please come and help out for a couple of hours. Also coming up we have the Mandeni Golf Day on Sunday 2nd November. Its a fun day with golf, bocce and a BBQ happening so put your name down on the attendance list at the club if you haven't done so yet. Andrew Buckland and Darragh Reynolds will open the Spencer Park Clubhouse this Friday 6.30 pm and have a full selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for all to enjoy. Guest speaker Rob Wood will give an informative talk on how to catch bream 7.30 pm followed by the local fishing report and beer and seafood raffle. Also don't forget our 20 tray seafood raffle held Sunday afternoons at the Merimbula Imlay Bowling Club starting 4pm.

The fishing is definitely looking better with anglers reporting flathead on the bite in 40 metres of water north of Merimbula. Anglers had to work for them taking most of the morning to scratch up a feed but this is better than spending time and money for an empty fish box.

Even more encouraging is the absence of gear pinching leatherjackets and the odd catch of gummy sharks for some. The next week will show a true picture of things to come with the moon on the rise and the water warming. Hopefully the inshore reefs will start to fire with snapper, morwong  and leatherjackets being the preferred species. Anglers fishing the shelf and wider are frustrated as the weather hasn't been kind enough for a deep drop which is a shame as this time of the year blue-eye trevalla and harpooka are usually on the chew.

Estuary fishing is fine with salmon ,tailor, bream and flounder all on the chew. Water temperature has shot from 14  to 18 degrees and it wont be long until dusky flathead and jewfish come on the chew. Local wharfs and headlands are  worth a shot with squid early mornings and late afternoons and salmon thick on the beaches.  Members and the general public are all invited to the Spencer Park Clubrooms October 24th  for a talk on bream fishing by Rob Wood. Rob is one of our most successful lake anglers and everyone that attends is sure to walk away with some helpful tips. Our Spencer Park Clubrooms will be open 6.30 pm this Friday with Rob Wood and Darragh Reynolds on bar duty. The beer and seafood raffle will be held after the local fishing report around 7.30 pm. Plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on offer so grab a friend and come on down for a fun night.
