Latest Fishing Reports
Fishing Reports - Merimbula's latest fishing reports are compliments of the Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club, with additional fishing reports from Headland Charters. Reports for previous months are archived under the relevant month.
What a week. Unfortunately the weather was against us although as much as the rain was needed the dreaded wind was also about and that has put paid to any fishing.
Its a bit of a shame as bottom bouncers were getting into flathead and snapper and the local estuaries are all on fire with all species on the chew.
The prawns should be running this week and the club is having a camping/prawning night this Saturday at Hobart Beach Wallagoot Lake. Bring a tent, sleeping blanket and prawning gear and join into the fun. Nothing better than freshly cooked prawns slapped between fresh bread I can assure you.
Tom Scott and Bill Pryor will open the Spencer Park Clubrooms 6.30 Friday night and members and the public are all welcome to a night of fishing stories and fellowship including a talk on salmon fishing by club gun Shane Mayberry. Our beer and seafood raffle will be after Shane's talk so grab a friend and come on down. See you at the Merimbula Imlay Bowling Club Sunday nights as we have our huge 15 tray seafood and cash bonus raffle drawn 7 pm. May your reel scream, Mex.
Bottom fishing outside is fantastic with catches of flathead, gummy shark and gurnard all on the sand flats and the inshore reefs are worth a shot with catches of snapper, leatherjacket, morwong, nannygai, sweep, pike and mackerel all on the chew.
Wide of the shelf is also a must with plenty of yellowfin, albacore and big makos reported throughout the southern zone. Plenty of harpooka for the bottom bashers out wide although the blue-eye trevalla are proving hard to find. The Merimbula Tackleworld Tri- Estuary Challenge held over last weekend was a fishing bonanza had by the twenty teams entered. Most crews caught plenty of fish including bream, whiting, dusky flathead, tailor, trevaly, flounder and snapper.
A big thank you to Ron and Gail for sponsoring us and I'm sure that this competion will only grow as anglers get into there lake fishing. Fish of the week would have to go to Rhonda King fishing Merimbula Lake. Rhonda caught herself a 1.2 kilo snapper which is a thumper to come out of any of our local estuaries. Shane Mayberry will be giving a talk on salmon fishing on November 28 at the Spencer Park Clubrooms and members and the public are all invited to attend this night. Shane has a lifetime of experience catching fish off the local beaches and I'm sure anyone attending will come away with a couple of tips on catching these sometimes elusive fish.
The following night November 29 we are heading off on a club prawning / camping night to Wallagoot Lake. Hopefully we will be sitting around a fire eating fresh prawns out of the pot come 10pm. Barry Francis and Darragh Reynolds will open the Spencer Park Clubhouse this Friday night so bring a friend or two and come on down for a couple of coldies. Local fishing report will be held prior to the beer and seafood raffle drawn around 8pm. Don't forget our huge 15 tray seafood raffle held at the Merimbula Imlay Bowling club Sunday afternoons drawn 7 pm. May your reel scream, Mex.
Capt Joe Gatt reports fishing on a calm, fine cloudy, day, with the water temp at 17o. The days catch consisted of 10 Morwong 1 snapper 32 cm. 6 flat head 45 cm. Joe commented that morwong sizes are now up to 2 Kg.
We stayed on the reef today the fish are starting to bite again the morwong were all around the 2 kg the reef has been very slow over the part few weeks the leather jackets are still around but they never gave trouble today. We seen 2 pods of whales they are on the tail end only 2 weeks left and they will be gone. Dolphins sighted today.

I'm hoping everyone has made sure that there gear is in top condition after the winter break as all reports are now positive with fish turning up on a regular basis. Gamefishing is starting to warm with reports of yellowfin and albacore tuna and it wont be long until a few sharks turn up in any well laid berly trails.
Kingfish are still being a bit tough to hook but on some occasions stretching anglers arms and tackle to the limit. The blue-eye trevalla and harpooka are also on the chew and last week produced fish due to settled weather. Inshore reefs are also on fire with plenty of snapper up to 2 kilo with a sprinkling of morwong and leatherjackets.
Fishing the sand flats was alot better than recent weeks with consistent catches of tiger and sand flathead up to 1.5 kilo and even a few wayward snapper and gummy sharks hit the deck. The added bonus to any outside fishing is the free whale show that's on any day of the week.
Estuary fishing is also coming to the fore with dusky flathead, snapper, bream, whiting, flounder, trevaly and tailor all on the chew which is fantastic as this weekend we will be holding the Merimbula Tackleworld Tri- Estuary Challenge. There is over $1000 cash plus rods and reels and many other prizes on offer and this competition is open to all anglers holding a NSW fishing licence unless exempt. A briefing will be held 7.30 pm Friday night at the Spencer Park clubhouse. Cost is $100 per team consisting of 2 anglers per boat. Additional anglers are $50 for seniors, $30 for anglers under 16 years of age.
All rules and entry forms will be available on the night or can be found at Merimbula Tackleworld next to the traffic lights in town. Ring Rob Wood 0413333598 or Michael Hampson 0400223742 if more information is needed. Friday 28th November will be a talk on salmon fishing by Shane Mayberry at the club and Saturday 29th the club will be heading to Wallagoot Lake for a night of prawning. Greg Liddell and Johno McKay will be on bar duty this Friday night and don't forger our huge seafood tray raffle at the Merimbula Imlay Bowling club on Sunday afternoons, May your reel scream,Mex.
