MBGALAC - 22/12/08

Melbourne angler Troy De Bono with a trophy size catch and release 78 cm dusky flathead caught in Pambula River.

Gamefishing is a little quiet out wide but boats fishing the bottom depths wide of the shelf are having success catching harpooka, bass groper and blue eye trevalla. The wide reefs out at 70 fathoms are also a bit tricky with wind and currents proving a bit tough for anglers to score a feed on a regular basis although reports are good with banded morwong and big tiger flathead about.

Inshore reefs have  been slow with only the odd catches of snapper  but plenty of other species including morwong and leatherjackets on the chew. Great news is the flathead caught north and south of Merimbula on all the grounds with a few gummy sharks thrown in with them. Some days they take a bit of finding but persistence crews are coming home with a decent feed.

Baits and soft plastics both work but it can be a bit tough for anglers using plastics  if the gear pinching chinamen leatherjackets are on the chew. Beach fishing has been great over the last couple of weeks with salmon and some monster tailor on the bite. Estuary fishing is still a fantastic option with all species on the chew and hopefully the prawns will also be running late this week.

We have 33 prizes up for grabs for members and visitors in this years Gala Fishing  Weekend run on the 3rd & 4 th January.  It will finish with a huge fish auction held at  Spencer Park  with money received heading to our Pambula Hospital. Entry forms can be paid at the clubrooms on Friday nights or at Merimbula Tackleworld  or McKays Discount Oysters. Andrew Buckland  and Darragh <wbr>Reynolds are on bar duty Boxing Day so come on down and enjoy a fun night with a couple of drinks at the Spencer Park clubrooms kicking of at 6.30 pm. Members and visitors all welcome with local fishing report held prior to the beer and seafood raffle around 7.45pm. Please remember our fishing clubs  huge 15 tray seafood raffle drawn Sunday nights 7.00pm at the Merimbula Bowling Club.

Other prizes are also on offer including a cash jackpot.  On behalf of the president and committee of the Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club I would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and happy new year with plenty of fishing trips to come.

May your reel scream, Mex.

MBGALAC - 8th Dec

Bill Pryor with a dusky flathead about to be released caught last Sunday in the Pambula River.

Outside fishing has been okay over the week with most anglers coming home with a feed of sand and tiger flathead. Unfortunately the gear pinching chinaman leatherjackets have also put in an appearance and this certainly does take the gloss of some great fishing.

Reef fishing can be tough but crews that are prepared to work hard and search for fish will be rewarded with a few good snapper. Kingfish are at Mowarry Point and as usual can be difficult to catch but again with a bit of persistence crews are catching a few.  All the lake and estuary systems are on fire with bream, dusky flathead, snapper, jewfish, tailor, whiting, trevaly and flounder on the chew.

Don't neglect any of our beaches with a decent gutter or holes on it as the salmon have started to also fire up. This Friday night Rob Wood and Dave Stewart will open the clubhouse expecting a big night as Santa will turn up at the kids Christmas party. Would all ladies please bring a plate and a gift for Santa to hand out  and contact Karen 64950609 if attending as the club needs to get an idea of numbers for catering purposes.

Activities for the kids will be organized along with a barbecue and lollies so come on down for a fun night. Everyone's welcome and as usual we will have the local fishing report prior to the beer and seafood raffle. We also need your support Sunday nights for  the 15 tray seafood raffle at the Merimbula Bowling Club drawn 7 pm.

May your reel scream, Mex.

MBGALAC - 1st Dec

The weather gods were good to us over the last week and didn't it make all the difference. Fishos that put to sea had a ball with plenty of sand and tiger flathead caught north and south of town. Reef fishing has also been just as successful with species including snapper, morwong and leatherjacket all on the chew.

Salmon are starting to show up on the beaches and river mouths and we should see them regularly as we get into the summer months. Estuary fishing is still firing with plenty of fish on the bite but unfortunately the prawns decided not to run again this month. Hopefully they will come on with a bang on the next dark.

Santa will be coming to the Fishing Club on Friday 12th Dec so hopefully plenty of kids will be at the club to meet him. Activities for the kids will be organized along with a BBQ and lollies. Would you please ring Karen 64950609 if you intend going and we ask the ladies to supply a plate being a salad or sweet and a small gift for Santa to hand out. Michael Hampson and Darragh Reynolds will open the Spencer Park clubhouse this Friday 6.30 pm and have a selection of alcoholic and non- alcoholic drinks along with cheese and bickies for  club members and visitors to our club. Beer and seafood raffle will be after the local fishing report so come on down for a fun night. Also please support the club by attending the huge 15 tray seafood raffle and other assorted prizes at the Merimbula Bowling Club drawn 7 pm Sunday nights.
