THE Tathra Wharf will be closed for 28 weeks from next week to enable restoration work to be done.
Bega Valley Shire Council's urban projects co-ordinator David Mitchell said the works would cause major disruptions, but they were needed to ensure public safety and the future of the popular precinct.
The restaurant will remain open.
"Engineering inspections indicate that essential works are required to the connections between the piling and headstocks, the deck and replacement of some girders," Mr Mitchell said.
"The works are expected to take about 28 weeks and Council staff realise this is a major disruption to the activities of both fishers and tourists, but it is impossible to carry out these essential works without some inconvenience to the public.
"Every effort will be made to accommodate visitors and locals but people must realise that we do have to follow stringent guidelines when carrying out such works."
The wharf has attracted significant State Government funding, following lobbying by Council, for the work.
"Inspections revealed that connections holding the structure together have deteriorated over the years and it might be possible in a high sea that the wharf could wash away," Mr Mitchell said.
The works will start on Wednesday, March 15.
The Tathra Wharf was constructed in the 1860s and used for the loading and unloading of freight up until 1954.
