St Georges Basin 30th Birthday

Well, what a day it has been! The St. Georges Basin VIEW Club celebrated its 30th birthday in style with over 90 members and guests at the Sanctuary Restaurant.

The 30th anniversary is a Pearl one, therefore EVERYBODY got their mikimotos out to fit the occasion. The table decorations, created by Ruth Gunn, looked lovely with gold candles adorned with strings of pearls. The beautiful birthcake, made by Beverley Askew, also showed a big “30” boasting countless pearls.

President Marie Northey was happy to welcome National Vice President Rhonda Spotiswood who came from Canberra. Also present was National Councillor Carleen Maley who traveled up from the Bega Valley, not to forget our own Zone Councillor Nancy Baker. We were also happy to welcome members from Shoalhaven Heads Evening, Nowra Day, Sussex Inlet South, Berry Evening and Mollymook VIEW Clubs.

One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of a 40-year membership badge to Worrowing Heights resident Sylvia Keech who joined VIEW in Hurstville way back in the 60s. The 30-year badges were presented to Doreen Lynch and Norma Brooks. Well done, ladies!

It was indeed an achievement that we were able to welcome three of our inaugural members at this occasion. Two of them, Norma Brooks and Doreen Lynch, are still members of St. Georges Basin VIEW and local residents, while Maralyn Toynton had traveled down from Roseville to join our celebrations.

It was interesting to hear Secretary Rita Curtis read out the minutes of the inaugural meeting which had taken place in 1976 at the Vincentia Golf Club. 21 people were involved to get VIEW started in our area and the cost of a 3 course meal was $3 in those days. How things have changed!

Entertainment of the day included a funny sketch called “Bus Stop”, with Jane Davis and Wilma McDonald. They represented two women of opposite ends of the social spectrum, meeting at a bus stop, which was quite hilarious. One arrived with a shopping trolley full of “basic items” like mop, scubbing brush, spray bottles of detergent, rubber globes etc. while the “lady” arrived with glacé gloves, compact, French perfume etc. Needless to say that there hardly was a dry eye in the house!

Next was the appearance of the ever popular Basin Belles presenting the local version of “Dancing with the Stars”. Couples Diane Doust with Marian Holmes, Val Giblin with Pat Whalan and Audrey Payne with Pauline Harris danced beautifully to the tune of “Moon River”, only to be put into their places by controversial judges Brenda Langridge and Wilma McDonald.

This was followed by the well known chicken dance, ably led by the “dancing stars” and enjoyed by everybody.
