generalization
generalization is the act of categorizing people into groups. It is something we all do naturally from time to time. Putting people into these groups is very limitating and closed minded.
It allows no room for the individual person who doesn't quite fit in a certain group. Also some of these generalizations are incorrect or even fabricated. One of the major examples is that a "witch" is evil.
Another example is the generalization that all aboriginal people are heavy drinkers, which is not true for all aboriginal people.
There are certain perceptions portrayed by the media which is where a lot of generalizationsbegan eg(thin models).
The generalization of thin models affects women from a young age. From them looking to models and thinking that they should be a certain shape or size.
Toys like barbi play a part in this also.
a while back a study was made into the dimensions of the shape of barbi. And it was found that if she were a real person she could not even stand up let alone function normally. Generalizations start at a very early age for both boys and girls, if you see a baby wearing blue clothes you automatically think that that is a boy and the same would go if a baby was wearing pink you would automatically think it was a girl.
i decided to write about generalization because i have personally experienced it in different stages of my life, some examples are being treated different cause of my size and appearance and beliefs. In a way being the victim of generalization gives me the ability to question the generalizations and try not to do it myself to others.
