We have been offered support by the following local groups and companies in the building of Stage 2 : permanent accommodation for people with profound disabilities; this stage has now commenced with the completion of  the pouring of over seventy piers and the set out happening from this week onwards (July 16th). The slab has been poured and we are ready to commence the frame early in the new year

Nardy House is designed to be the permanent home of six people with profound disabilities. The house will operate as all homes do: as a base from which a person interacts with the community. Normal household routines will operate and be changed to accommodate this interaction. Working drawings have been undertaken and approved and building has commenced.

A separate facility on site is designed to provide short term and crisis respite for up to six people with profound disabilities. The building of this facility has been assisted by a grant from the State Government. The building, with the help of many local businesses, organisations and individuals has now been completed; it is recurrently funded by the NSW Government.

The concept to develop Nardy House came from a group of parents who cared for children with profound disabilities. These parents realised that eventually they would be unable to meet the demanding role of caring for their children.

They also realised that their children would be placed in nursing homes as this was the only housing option available. The alternative was to provide a secure and appropriate form of home that was equal to the quality and care received from the family.

We now have a specialised facility designed to cater for people with profound disabilities and the respite needs of their carers offering a service.

The facility operates on a twenty four hour/ seven day a week basis and provides both planned and crisis respite.

DADHC is running the facility for the first two years in conjunction with an Advisory Board consisting of two Nardy House members and two DADHC representatives with an independent Chairperson.

The aim is to have the Nardy Houuse Board ready to take over the running of the respite facility two years from now. At this stage carers should contact the Southern Area of DADHC regarding use of the facilty.

There is some paperwork involved in applying for respite and this should be applied for and organised through Case Managers.

Despite the official opening fiasco the Committee and Southern Region DADHC have worked hard together to get the facility operational.

We are ready to start the next Stage of our Project!

Working drawings by Architect, Bert Peters, and garden designs by Jan Kydd are ready for submission to Bega Valley Shire Council. We are ready to begin site preparation for the permanent accommodation stage of the Nardy House facility. The facility is designed to cater for six people with profound disabilities. The facility is a six bedroom house and the design features will appear soon on this web site.

Bermagui Lion, Keith Mc Kee and Narooma Lion, John Cheesman,  have worked with the Nardy House Committee to prepare a submission to Lions International for assistance with infrastructure funding for this stage of the project. The Zone Lions Clubs have been very supportive and have enabled the progress of this submission by being consistently supportive.The Submission received solid support from the Cabinet meeting of Lions and is now being forwarded to the United States. We are keeping our fingers crossed!

The carer face , the media image of the Nardy House Project ,has died. Rex Hilton and his wife Betsy donated the five acres of land for the Nardy House Project. Rex never got to use the respite facility however he never withdrew his support and willingness to be the carer who put his situation in the public gaze. We will miss him.

The NSW State Government via the Director General ,DADHC, Mr Brendan O'Reilly, insisted on a partnership deal in November between Nardy House and DADHC - with DADHC acting as our service provision mentor. Have they produced a partnership deal? - NO WAY! The game plan is to string us along until after the elections. We will keep you informed regarding developments- Cheers Denise
