Basic CubaseSX how-to (work in progress)

This is a basic how to for getting cubaseSX running its very much a work in progress but it should be helpful if you dont know where to start with cubase as just about all music programs it looks scary when you first look at it

/**Update 12/05/05: the images on this page had been broken for quite a long time there now working again so it should be useful for anyone who finds this page useful speaking of which if theres any tutorials concerning cubase that anyone would like done just post a request on my forum and ill get it done as soon as i can cubase is such an immense program that its hard to pick one area to write a tutorial on but if someone brings something that is holding them back id gladly write up something**/

    Step 1 open cubase

Step 2 click on the file menu then go to new

(A menu will appear with choices of what you wish to use weather it be a midi track or an audio track or a blank track which you can add what you like to it is probally preferable to select the empty one seeing it 1 uses less cpu power and 2 it lets you customize it how you want it)

*NOTE this maybe different for you if you have a higher version then sx1.0 which is what i used when writting this*

Step 3 assuming that you selected empty track click on project then go to addtrack and select midi

(It is the same step to add other audio tracks but im just using midi for this how-to as its easier to use even if you have no midi interfaces if you have midi songs or audio tracks that you want to use instead you would put them in by going to file then import)

now we need something to let us actually hear something this is where we install the instrument

Step 4  click on the devices menu

(the option you are looking for here is the 8th one down labled "vst instruments")

step 5 click on vst instruments

    (a dialog box will appear)

step 6 click on the first box

(a list of instruments will appear depending on the plugins you have installed you may have more or less instruments)

step 7 click synths then click a1

(a1 is a basic instrument pack that has a bit of everything enough to make a song with)

step 8 click on out under the midi track you added earlier and select a1

(it may not be obvios at first where out is under the midi box there is a spot where you can resize pull that down so you can see the out box)

    Step 9

click on the select bar where the white arrow is poiting and drag the triangle along the ruler till its at the length you want

    Step 10

Double click in the area next to the midi track you added earlier that will select it and you can change the size if you wish to make your track longer

    Step 11

now double click on the selected area this will open the editor which you can add notes onto by clicking on the pencil you can draw notes

theres a handy right-click menu which has the eraser so you can fix your mistakes quickly or if your like me and like to play by ear you can change things quickly to how you like it

now after you have got your song how you like it you can either just save it for working with it later

or you can export it if you want to put it on the web theres a couple of options under export

the first one midi is quite simple there is one there called audio mixdown though which you can save different formats including mp3 and wav etc

you can also customize the options of the file like the sample rate mono or stereo channels and other options like automation and effects all of these options count towards the filesize/quality.

there is alot more to cubase it has some major powerful features some of thease are changing the pitches of voices in songs this is what alot of record produces do to make pretty models sound good

also there are settings for every track you make that you can change im not going to get into the equilizers just yet but some of the things you can do with them is make drums sound deeper and more real and give voices an edge and make gutairs sound better the list goes on

here is a pic of the equilizer knobs for the track mixer
