Email

Email is now a critical part of communication both business and personal.

However many people are experiencing more and more problems as their email demands increase. On this page I will explore the more common problems and offer some solutions.

How can I get to my mail from anywhere ?

Ok, you have checked your mail from home using outlook or similar. Now your at work and you need details from a message you got at home. You check your mail at work and guess what ? Its not there. What can you do ?

Some options...

  • Set your email client (outlook) to not delete messages from server. This solves your problems, as now you can get mail from anywhere again and again. But one big problem, now you have the same messages all over the place. Everytime you check your mail you get it all again, no good?
  • Use a webmail system. Again problem solved but free webmail system are slow, often filled with adds and are lacking in features and have various limits on space and message sizes.
  • Set your email client to use IMAP (must be supported by your email host), this one really nails it.

IMAP

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a newer alternative to POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3). Both IMAP and POP3 are protocols for getting at your mail. Slowly but surely more and more ISP's are supporting IMAP, why ?.

a) you can get mail from any PC and know that all the PC's you use will be updated.

b) you can reorganise your messages and know they will updated for you when you get home.

c) you can share mail folders with friends and know youre getting their latest changes aswell.
