Her Excellency, the Governor of NSW accompanied by her husband, Sir Nicholas Shehadie, has accepted an invitation from Candelo AH & DF Association to open their 122nd Show in January 2009.
Association secretary, Sandy Macqueen, said "the invitation was issued in May and supported by Bega Council, Bega Cheese, and both State and Federal Members. The Governor's Personal Secretary and Chief of Staff telephoned to inform us that our invitation was accepted, and he commented on the strong level of support we had received, which, he said was quite unusual."
With the Equine Influenza having such a dramatic effect on Shows this year, Mr Macqueen said Her Excellency's presence at our Show in January will be the welcome morale booster we all need, not only for Candelo, but that the whole of the Bega Valley will receive appropriate recognition for the tough times with the drought of the last few years.
Mr Macqueen said "we will be inviting all other Show Associations in the Valley to be involved and to be a part of the day. We will be encouraging as many entries as we can possibly manage in all classes of competition as we expect Her Excellency will spend some time viewing our exhibits".
Mr Macqueen was also advised that it is most likely that Her Excellency will spend more than just the day in the area. The local State Member, Mr Andrew Constance, was delighted with the news, and he now has the task of preparing The Govenor's itinerary. Mr Constance will be looking to involve as wide a cross section of the community as possible.
This is indeed an historic event for Candelo, and indeed for the whole Bega Valley. Her Excellency is well known for her wish to meet and talk with people and we are sure that a very warm welcome will be given to her and Sir Nicholas.
