The Bega Valley Historical
Society Inc. WELCOMES YOU TO The
BEGA PIONEERS’ MUSEUM

One of the first Hotels built in the CBD of early Bega. Surveyor Spencer L Bransby, Commissioner for Lands, built the original building in 1858, and the first proprietor was John Needham, who sold to James Rixon from the ‘Crown & Anchor’ at Eden. Rixon then moved to the Commercial Hotel and sold to Henry Underhill, starting a S8year association of the Underhill/Rixon family. The last owner, Mrs Jane Rixon (nee Underhill) sold to Mr Cornelius ‘Con’ Buckley in 1922, who was followed by a former Lord Mayor of Sydney Mr Patrick Stokes, a former Australian Middleweight Boxing Champion, Tim Land, and lastly in 1938 by Mr Maurice Stevens, who moved the Licence to the newly built Grand Hotel at the corner of Carp & Auckland Sts.

The Harry Scanes family operated the old Hotel as a boarding house and family home until it was sold to the Bega Valley Historical Society in 1975 and converted into the wonderful Museum it is today.

A Brief Early History of Bega Valley

In 1829 some Braidwood squatters came down Eurambene Mt into Wandella near Cobargo to explore the kangaroo grasslands and open forests.  They returned with cattle in 1832 and William Duggan Tarlinton chose Cobargo for his run. Other squatters included John Campbell, Henry Badgery, Captain Raine, Thomas Cowper, Curlewis, Major Elrington, Pollack brothers, Alsops and Dr Braidwood, who did not settle in the Valley.
