The Belles & Beaux of St Clement's

Brief History

The Belles & Beaux of St Clements, Merimbula was formed in 2000, The Church needed a new photo copier so the organist offered to organise a music hall as a fund raiser. A few girls were eager to have a go - but only two men, the group struggled along learning songs, dance routines and dialogue, all very new to us-we were having fun! Eventually, tapping a few men on the shoulder built up a small cast. The show ran for 2 nights and a matinee that year and we were encouraged to keep going. As the years have passed we've built up our self made wardrobe of costumes and props. The cast too, has grown, hailing from Bega, Pambula,Wolumla, Wyndham, Merimbula & Tura Beach. Our Script writing team ensures humour, original material and music to tell the story. It's amazing how many people give up their time and effort to help with the grass roots work, even a newsletter to keep us informed during rehearsal period. All profit from the Belles & Beaux of St. Clements is channeled to charities including:- Anglicare. (Equivalent to St. Vincent De Paul). Medicines san Frontiers. Our foster child in Ethiopia-Andenet Legasse. Cancer patients in our community. Rural Bush Fire Brigade. Resources to encourage Christian standards through the Merimbula Pambula Parish. And many other immediate needs eg. The Tsunami in Indonesia.

Tears Amongst The Laughter.

The season for musical comedy of "Knights in Tights" by the Belles and Beaux of St Clement's was filled with songs and laughter for eight performances.

However, in the midst of this season Eric Atkinson, a versatile comedian, scriptwriter and creator of spectacular props, lost his long battle with cancer.

Eric died on Thursday, May 8, 2008.

The cast and crew felt great sorrow and the loss of a good friend, but the show had to go on and with Eric in their hearts they rose to give among some of of the most brighest and bouncy show they have presented.

A matinee was presented for mainly seniors and students on 2 April where tickets were available for an affordable price. Nursing homes and hostels were admitted free of charge.

Friday 2 May's takings have been donated to the world wide organisation of medecins sans Frontieres, [Doctors without Borders] who take urgent medical aid into disaster areas such as the recent Chinese earthquake zone and health care to the 3rd world.

Other important donations will be:

To help acquire a 'guide dog for the deaf' for Anthony Bond, Wolumla Rural Bush Fire Brigade, Merimbula Scouts, Sponsorship of our foster child in Ethiopia, Anglicare, St Vincent de Paul and the assistance to our community by St Clement's Anglican Church.

We would like to thank all who attended the performances. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and that we could bring a little laughter into your lives, perhaps amongst some of your own tears.
