Last weekend's opening round of the Garden of Eden project's table tennis competition proved to be popular with local residents and visitors alike with a strong contingent of players travelling from Bega to issue a challenge to locals and a surprise entrant taking out honours on the day.
John Pearson, who hails from Devon in England and in his own words is "approaching 70", travels to Australia every few years to watch the Australian Open in Melbourne. Passing back through Eden on the next leg of his journey to New Zealand and noticing the invitation, John couldn't resist doing his bit to promote English sporting prowess against the Aussies and like his cricketing counterparts proved to be too good in the finals beating Eden's Chris Dalton 21 - 11.
Other players to note were young Brad Moon from Bega as well as father-son combination from the Pobjie family. Given the high degree of interest it was decided to continue the competition on a regular basis with the next round scheduled for the third week in March, Saturday 17th March at the Hall in Chandos Street, registrations at 10am. Entry fee on the day is $5 with all proceeds going to support the Garden of Eden community project. Enquiries to 6496 1759.
Hopefully next month we'll see some representatives from Merimbula to liven up the competition even more!

"Duyfken" in Eden 11 - 20 November 2006
Locals and visitors alike had a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a working 16th century vessel when the replica of the Dutch ship Duyfken sailed into Eden on its 12,000km voyage to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first documented European contact with Australia.
The journey marked the first mapping of the Australian coast by Duyfken Captain Willem Janszoon, who chartered 320km of coastline off Cape York Peninsula.

The replica of James Cook's HM Bark Endeavour anchored in Eden between 4 and 10 April 2006. The Endeavour was en route from Melbourne to its home at the Maritime Museum in Sydney after a voyage coinciding with the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Locals and tourists alike took the opportunity to visit the ship and learn about life on an 18th century scientific exploration vessel.
You can read more about the ship including the Captain's log of her latest journey here.

Does anyone know the origin of the name "Asling", in connection with the beach in Eden?
A recent visitor to Eden has written to our website asking this question, as he has Canadian relatives with this surname and was interested to find out if there was some connection.
Please email me using the contact form below if you know the answer and I will pass on the information to our visitor.
And on that note, does anyone know why the beach is referred to as Asling Beach in some places and Asling's Beach in others? Is there an official version?
Thanks and cheers! -Ed
