| Mahatma Gandhi, ink on paper, 16.5cm x 19.5cm. | We have been created to do small things with great love. I believe that this great love comes from our hearts, and it should start at home – with my family, my neighbours across the street, those right next door. And this love should then reach everybody.” | We all have more kindness inside us than we use. A set of cards has been designed which entitle the bearer to perform an act of kindness. Kindness Cards are a promotion of self-awareness and self-responsibility. Based on the notion of 'passing it on,' infinite amounts of kindness can be generated through what you choose to do in the present moment. They have been made the same size as business cards so as to fit easily into your wallet, a constant reminder that more love and kindness is always within reach. This idea was inspired by the movie Pay it Forward. In the movie a schoolboy chose to take a homeless drug addict into his house, gave him money, and fed him. He also went about the huge task of finding his single, alcoholic mother a boyfriend! His idea was to do something big for somebody that they couldn't do for themselves. The only stipulation with these cards is that the act of kindness must be unexpected. It can be as small or as large as the imagination will allow. How a dream became a reality Donna Meyer, creator and producer of Kindness Cards is an artist, and mother of three young children, living on the far south coast of NSW. The underlying objective of all her artwork is to raise the consciousness of humanity by inspiring positive thinking and positive emotions. She had an idea to design a series of portraits of famous people with quotes or teachings sympathetic to Donna's own beliefs. A friend of hers was running an etching workshop locally and so her idea began with an etching of spiritual leader and international peacemaker Mahatma Gandhi, with the quote “an eye for an eye will make us all blind.” Her dream was for these teachings to reach as many people as possible and to make them affordable for everybody. Whilst musing over how she would achieve this, Donna was the receiver of a random act of kindness during a shopping trip at Woolworths in Merimbula. At the checkout, she realised that she had left her cash card at home and that she was $40 short of cash. Just as she was about to return some goods, a guy called Dennis (he was actually the general manager) walked over to the checkout, pulled out his wallet and handed Donna $40 out of his own money! ( - Thank you again Dennis). Driving home Donna realised that similar events have been a common occurrence throughout her life. Kindness Cards are her way of 'paying it forward.' She decided to marry the two ideas together and make her inspiring images, plus infinite acts of kindness, available for only 70c. Email Donna | Etchings by Donna Meyer Etching: A metal plate is coated by a material which resists acid, called the ground. The artist then draws her design on the ground with a sharp needle which removes the ground where it touches it, thus exposing the plate. When the plate is put in an acid bath, these exposed parts will be etched or eaten away. This produces the recessed line which will hold the ink once the plate is inked and wiped. A damp piece of paper is laid on the plate and passed through a press forcing the paper into the recessed area to receive the ink. The etchings are printed on 230gsm paper using a sepia coloured ink. The paper size is 28cm x 31cm, with the actual print measuring 16.5cm x 19.5cm. Etchings can be purchased for $90 plus postage + packing ($5.70). Send a cheque or money order to Donna Meyer at PO Box 9111, Wyndham, NSW 2550. Please include your name, address and telephone number. Expect delivery within 14 days. ALL ETCHINGS ARE SIGNED ORIGINAL PRINTS. See this website for forthcoming etchings of spiritual teachers such as the Dalai Lama, Jesus Christ, Mother Teresa and Buddha.
