In 2000, the Rocky Hall Pre-school committee applied to NSW Dept for Women for a grant for a project named Internet Access for Women. This grant provided funds for the set-up and access, provided basic computer and internet skills training and provided training to skilled users to ‘mentor’ less skilled users.
The project has been a huge success. Training was provided for over 40 people living in the area, with the priority on women, and those involved in the preschool itself. There were different levels of training offered for those with varying prior experience.
A network of three computers, scanner, colour and laser printers, laminator, modem, CD writer, digital camera and the appropriate software programs has allowed all the administration, publicity and parent information work to be done at the preschool instead of privately. Desktop publishing is also a developing project.
The digital camera and scanner have been indispensable within the preschool, with many photos of the children at play, artwork and craft projects all being recorded. A yearbook was created for the children incorporating photos of each individual child, their artwork, and the child’s story. The preschool children have had some time in the computer room practicing their mouse skills using paint programs and other games and typing in their names.
Internet access is available to preschool families as well as the general public. Establishment of this website is seen as a major achievement for a small rural pre-school.
Further funding from the Mumbulla Foundation and CDSE has allowed continuation of the project, further purchases and further training opportunities.
The preschool yearbook has become an annual item and a new project of making DVDs for each child utilising photos and music from throughout the year has now expanded the use of the equipment.
