Today the world famous Solartaxi travelled through our beautiful Bega valley with a stopover at Merimbula. Louis Palmer has driven 16305km all across the world to promote his vision of a sustainable alternative to oil powered transportation.
When Louis started his journey in Lucerne, Switzerland, he didn't know for sure where the road would lead him, but more and more people became interested in his trip which has been covered by the German newspaper website Spiegel Online and other media as well as on his own website, and he received invitations from all over the world.
So far he has been to Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, New Zealand, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slowakia, Syria, Turkey and United Arab Emirates. But his journey is far from over, with China, Japan and Korea next on the itinerary.
But today the Solartaxi was in Merimbula, which marked a great event in this valley which is home to such great community efforts as Clean Energy for Eternity, Seed Savers Network, LETS and the Sappire Coast Producers Association which all find communication outlets at TheBegavally.org.au and Sustain Magazine.
Louis shares his dream of an individual who can change the world. And we in the Bega valley have also already sown the seeds for that change by investing our energy into the community. To start something small, making it stick and then to make it grow.
Just go and see the Solartaxi for yourself before it heads off to Melbourne! Tomorrow morning, Saturday 9th February 2008 you can see this little masterpiece of Swiss engineering and talk to Louis and his camera team at the old petrol station site (near McDonalds) in Market Street Merimbula from 10.00am until 12.30pm.
