(The Price of Love)

Book, Lyrics and Music by Paul Dion.

based on "Rose" by Robert Wainwright.

To be directed by Elaine Waddell.

Season July 30 - August 14

(Rehearsals now underway)

Prix D'Amour is cast

Spectrum Theatre Group’s latest production is in rehearsal and with a big cast of 23 it’s hardly surprising that it’s creating a buzz around town.

The cast will be the first to perform a new musical called Prix D’Amour, based on the colourful life of Rose Hancock, the Filipino who married one of Australia’s richest men, mining magnate, Lang Hancock.

Rose Hancock will be played by Jennifer Hughes who is of Korean descent and was brought up in America.

Lang Hancock will be played by Geoff Carswell and Willie Porteous, who completes the love triangle, will be played by newcomer, Tom Oriti. Gina Hancock, Lang’s daughter will be played by Gail Griffin.

Just finished!

The Pirates of Pambula Beach

Arrrr me hearties – Cap’n John Fraser has penned a pearler of a panto called

"The Pirates of Pambula Beach"

Lots of characters, rollicking songs and funny situations.

“The Pirates of Pambula Beach” is a hoot from start to finish, as we follow the antics of Captain Fathom (John Fraser) and his less-than-bright offsider Uriah Frothbottle (Bruce Waddell). They are searching for a treasure which they think may be buried at Pambula Beach, but they must find the missing piece of a treasure map to be sure. The villainous Phineas Festerpus (Sam Roberts) constantly thwarts their plans, while shipwreck survivors Jim (Lewis Nadin), Lucy (Chloe Oastler) and  Doctor Collywobble (Hugo White) complicate matters even further. The Pirates are well served by young Jib (Kelsey Martyn) – but Jib also has a secret! This is a show for all ages!

Performed Dec 4-13 2009

Spectrum Theatre Group is CAT award winner

Bill Deveril of the Spectrum Theatre Group with the award he received in Canberra for best set design.

Congratulations to Bill Deveril who has been recognised for his theatrical set design after recreating both the look and the atmosphere of a 1970s Australian rules football club boardroom for Spectrum Theatre Group’s production of ‘The Club’ by David Williamson.

One of six nominees from 55 theatrical companies across the ACT and NSW, Bill was awarded best set designer for a play at the Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) Awards on Saturday, February 20.

Bill also directed the play, which deals with the scandal, mistrust and manipulation behind the scenes at a prominent Melbourne Aussie rules football club.

Bill was nominated for best director, and the production was nominated for best play while both Geoff Carswell and Bruce Waddell were nominated for their featured roles in ‘The Club’.

Spectrum Theatre Group featured in the general entertainment during the awards evening at the Canberra Theatre when Geoff Carswell donned green greasepaint and become Toad in the Wind in the Willows, driving across the stage in a special car created by Greg Whitby.

Toad’s entrance was nominated for a magic moment of theatre.

The CAT awards recognise the work of amateur and pro-am productions and in 2009 judges visited 96 plays, musicals and variety shows across a wide area including Canberra, Dubbo, Orange, Wagga Wagga, Cooma, Albury and the South Coast to critic the work of more than 6,000 performers and production personnel.

With so many entries from around the region, it's a real coup to get six nominations just from Spectrum Theatre Group.

NIDA workshops a great success

NIDA workshops in acting and directing were held from October 3-11 due to organization by Spectrum and Co-Ordination by Bruce Waddell. NIDA Tutor Jessica Tuckwell did a magnificent job in running 3 workshops - a 2-day in directing - a 4-day in acting for 12-16 year olds - and a 2-day in acting for 16 years to adults.

In all, 39 people attended the various workshops, coming from various theatre groups, secondary schools and indivduals from the Bega Valley Shire and Mallacoota.

Many new skills were learned and a greater knowledge of the processes of both acting and directing was absorbed. All participants were keen and committed, impressing Jessica with their enthusiasm.
